A Cloud of Unknowing is a solitary prayer space designed in response to the octagonal shape of the Immanuel Chapel at Virginia Theological Seminary. Before entering the chapel, visitors are invited to take off their shoes in a hallway with written instructions for the practice of contemplative prayer. They enter the room alone and close the curtain. The text is a translation of The Cloud of Unknowing, an anonymous mystical English text from the 14th century.
